Tragic memories of long ago kept crawling my mind every time I see an avatar around. Stories are plentiful of so called white mages claiming victory against the primes even before I had my first encounter with them. To defeat a prime by outdueling them at their very best is not the same as defeating them by some sneaky tactic that revolves around outlasting them in a battle.
My first encounter dueling it out with a prime avatar was a lesson in humility. Winning against the prime avatars by trying to outlast them gave me this guilty feeling of unworthiness of being a melee white mage. It is akin to fighting as a red mage whose strategy almost always revolves around wearing the opponent down till it's too weak to fight. Most true damage dealing jobs lives and die by speed and power to win a given fight. Their victory are more magnanimous just because of the sheer ferocity and fearless approach to anything they encounter. If the fight goes beyond their ability to survive a prolonged battle, then death to them is inevitable. In the land of Vanadiel, winning at any cost will always be a win, even a non playing character (NPC) recognizes this fact. But to the very few adventurers who have honed their skills by fighting countless monsters throughout their lifetime, winning alone is not enough to give them the satisfaction they crave. Out of these adventurers, an elite few will standout and become the talk of the town solely because of the might and prowess they show that are beyond expectations. The story always goes like this... "Have you heard or seen this (damage dealing job goes here) doing (damage here) on (monster here)". The path of true damage dealers is more clear and the stories along with them are more common. Every commoner of Vanadiel can easily understand and relate to these stories.
During my early adventuring days, I have heard of a story about the existence of legendary relics weapons that are suppose to trump all other weapons. Weapons of godly power that only gods of Vanadiel can wield. Then the gods decided to bestow these weapon to the mortals of Vanadiel who are worthy of such. One of this weapon was a legendary club that is the most powerful single handed weapon that ever existed known to Vanadiel. The gods of Vanadiel chose the altruists as the only job to wield this weapon. Why choose white mage as the wielder of the most powerful single handed weapon ever? I decided to embarked on this journey to seek answers. To do this I had to assume the job of a meleeing white mage. A job that very few will understand and never bother to embark. The gods of Vanadiel have already foretold the ending of the story and they clearly understand why white mage was the one to wield such a weapon. The only way to find the answer is to wield the weapon. Doing so will require a white mage to experience both the wrath of public opinion and gods fickle mazes of never ending battles, quests, missions and spending unreasonable amount of wealth.
It was time to meet the avatar primes again. This time I am more prepared to duel them head on and fight them at their best. This time its not about winning the fight anymore. It is all about gaining the utmost highest respect of the avatar primes. For them to recognize that a white mage has finally manage to show what the gods of Vanadiel have foreseen will happen. The fights were intense and ferocious. Swinging 8-16 times every 6 seconds can take its toll on a casting whm. Fighting with reckless abandon like a true damage dealer. Casting cures after being take down to a sliver of health and then almost back to full health. Each round of swing from both sides was never boring. It is rare that an avatar prime encounter will encounter a fight like this. The fight they have been waiting for eons of time has finally happen. So much mana points and hit points was expended for one battle in just a short amount of time. The fight ends and only one is standing. I felt the sense of worthiness I was seeking for a long long time even though it is for just a short while. The prime avatars affirms this feeling and they themselves are proud that such an adventurer has given them the type of battle they wanted. There was an untold sense of agreement between the two combatants that a battle worthy of lasting memory has just transpired.
My avatar primes experience has given me a glimpse of reason why the gods of Vanadiel created a weapon so destructive that they chose only a true altruist wielder for it. I am off to find new adventures and seek more answers... hoping to understand the gods of Vanadiel wisdom.
